Copy of the preface to A register of the parochial library of Feltham in Middlesex, founded by ... Sir Matthew Decker, ca. 1715 [manuscript], ca. 1725.

Possibly spoken at the library's dedication. Discusses the principles upon which a parish library should be established and "into what narrow a compass a set of valuable and well chosen books...may be brought, preserved clean, and secured in book presses" (leaf 27). Sets forth the need for a scheme containing the whole system of theology and for a blank register with a table of heads into which the titles of the books, whether belonging to the library or borrowed or to be acquired, could be entered. The contents of parish libraries within a small area should be diversified and made complementary. Quotes from Erasmus' Ecclesiastes. At the beginning is a printed copy of An act for the better preservation of parochial libraries in that part of Great Britain called England, accompanied by Rules for the better preservation of parochial libraries.
